Fantastic Result for Alex Powell
Alex Powell (10) fenced in the under 11 Campden Leon Paul Junior Series competition last weekend. In a field of 17, Alex showed some fantastic skills in her first year at this age group to win a bronze medal. Well done Alex. At RYF we are continually looking at how we can develop the club. One main development we can make is by increasing the number of girls we have attending regularly and so we are looking at starting a new group aimed solely at girls from the local area. This new group should be starting on 6th November, if you know of any girls who might be interested in attending this group please let Hannah know and she will give/ send you a flier. |

Hannah Rekindles Her Pre-Injury Form
RYF coach Hannah Chenneour came 14th at the recent Senior British National Fencing Championships. A few years go Hannah was ranked in the UK top 10 in Women’s Epee, but a chronic shoulder injury has forced her to miss most of the last 2 seasons. Hannah has lacked in confidence since returning, but her performance at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield showed why she was a member of the Senior British Squad before her injury. Beating the current GB number 3 (Megan Lomas) in the early rounds settled Hannah after a slightly shaky start. She went on to convincingly beat last year’s quarter finalist Hannah Shackleton in the last 32, 15 points to 9. Her next fight against Ali Evans should have been straight forward, and it started well with Hannah taking an early 6 - 1 lead in the 1st to 15 fight. Evans, who had earlier beaten GB number 13 (Jade Clark), then began a startling recovery scoring hit after hit, running out the eventual winner by 15 - 12. This result sees Hannah's GB senior ranking rise to 29, moving back towards her rightful place in the top 10. |

Goodbye Neil Seager
Redditch Youth Fencing Club is very sad to lose one of their coaches this week. Neil Seager joined the club as a fencer aged 9, was Club Captain at 17 and then joined the coaching staff at 18. He has taught the basics of fencing to every new pupil who has joined us for the past 2 years. He is training to become an accountant and now must concentrate on his rapidly approaching exams. RYFC would like to thank Neil for his hard work and wish him well for the future, you shall be missed. |

Results from the Hereford & Worcester Champs
In the Men’s Foil event, Andy Chung (17) and Head Coach, Sam Stockley represented Redditch Youth FC. Sam was undefeated in the early round and was ranked 1st going into the knock-out stages. Andy had a more difficult start but managed to enter the business end of the tournament as 5th seed. Andy met local coach Matt Haynes, from Malvern, in the quarter final. Chung took an early lead putting Haynes in a bad temper for the remainder of the fight. This could have disrupted Andy mentally but he held his nerve to take the fight 15 points to 12 which meant he next faced Stockley in the semi-final. Sam led from start to finish but Chung never let go or gave up and always kept the fight close with Sam running out the winner 15 - 12. Sam then met Dan Robinson (19) from Ross on Wye in the final, despite Dan being ranked 13th in the UK senior foil rankings, he had not once beaten Stockley. This time Robinson’s superior fitness told and he ran out a worthy winner as he beat Stockley for the first time 15 - 11. Hannah Chenneour won the Women’s Epee event with only a few worrying moments. Local prodigy Elizabeth Powell (14) from Bromsgrove gave Hannah her closest moment leading her 14 – 13 in the first to 15 semi final. Hannah’s experience told as she patiently waited for the right opportunities and took the last 2 hits to knock-out Powell who took the bronze medal for a very creditable 3rd place. In the final Hannah met her county team mate Emma Potter from Stourbridge. After the close semi-final Hannah started like an express train and won the fight 15 – 5 in less than 3 minutes, taking the H&W title for the 1st time. |

Harris Qualifies for European Championships
James Harris (19) from Bromsgrove has recently qualified for the British Epee Team at the U20 European Championships. The selection is made using the national under-20 ranking at the end of the season, which finished in July. Harris finished the season ranked 3rd in the UK and therefore qualifies for the 3-man team at the European Championships which take place in Odense, Denmark in October. This follows from his selection at the U20 World Championships which took place in Belfast in April. |
